The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is set to
launch the new smart driving licenses this July in a bid to restore sanity on
Kenyan roads. Following the escalating cases of reckless driving and over
speeding among motorists, NTSA came up with an electronic system that will
enable them to keep track of rogue motorists.
According to the NTSA director of Road Safety Njeri
Waithaka, the smart licenses will contain drivers profile and a track record of
traffic offenses. NTSA previously stated that 31 percent of accidents that occurred
on Kenyan roads in 2016 were caused by private vehicles. Njeri Waithaka also
said that public service vehicles were no different as they have been the most
notorious in breaking traffic rules.
Previously, the authority had initiated the use of ‘Alcoblow’
to be able to detect the level of alcohol consumed by motorist. The use of the
famous breathalyzers was later ruled out by the court after being termed as
illegal in accordance to the constitution. Off to a flying start the NTSA director-general
Meja Francis confirmed that the contract had been signed with the Central bank
for manufacture and formulation of smart driving licenses yet to be launched.
All Kenyan motorists will ultimately be required to have the
new smart licenses in phases to allow time to those who recently renewed their
driving licenses.
Check out the anticipated smart driving license.
